Everyone has a preference when it comes to many aspects of life, and brushing your teeth is no exception. When it comes to the type of toothbrush you brush with, many factors should be taken into consideration. And if you have braces, it’s even more important to ensure you’re getting a proper clean each and every time you brush. Whether you choose a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, if you’re not using it properly, you run the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and other scary consequences. Here’s some help if you’re trying to decide which type of toothbrush is right for you.

What to Look for in a Toothbrush

Depending on the sensitivity of your teeth and gums, you may want to opt for softer bristles, so you’re not causing yourself any discomfort, and you should never go harder than a medium bristle. Deciding between a manual toothbrush and an electric toothbrush may take a bit of time, as there are benefits to both methods. Many orthodontists recommend electric toothbrushes because they work effectively every time you brush and there are a host of benefits that go along with using one.

Brushing with an Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are beneficial to patients with braces, due to the fact that many models have timers and pressure sensors to ensure you’re brushing for the correct amount of time and applying the right amount of force. This helps you know you’re cleaning your teeth and braces effectively. Other benefits of electric toothbrushes include:

  • Ease of use
  • Perfect for young people and those with limited mobility
  • Provides a deeper clean

When looking at electric toothbrushes, try to find one with soft bristles and a small brush head if you have braces. Also, be sure you’re brushing every area of your mouth, including all pieces of orthodontic equipment, such as brackets and bands, to ensure a proper clean. The electric movement of the brush certainly helps aide in cleaning, but it is still up to you to move the brush around to all areas of the mouth.

Brushing with a Manual Toothbrush

Manual toothbrushes can still provide a quality clean; however, it is up to you to ensure this. If used properly, manual toothbrushes can do an efficient job at cleaning teeth, but they’re often used improperly. Ensuring that you’re brushing for the proper amount of time with the proper force and getting to all parts of the mouth is essential to a good clean with a manual toothbrush. Brushing with a soft to medium bristle brush, using light force in circular motions is key when wearing braces. Many people fail to adhere to these rules, thus making electric toothbrushes widely recommended by most dental professionals.

A Good Clean

We keep mentioning a good clean, and it’s for a good reason. Maintaining proper oral hygiene techniques should be a focus throughout your entire life, not just when you have braces. The health of your teeth and gums can affect the rest of your body, so be sure, whether you’re brushing with a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, you find a method you’re comfortable with and you adhere to proper oral hygiene. In doing this, you’re setting yourself up for success!

Laurie and Dr. Patel are great. We just purchased a package of round two for invisalign for my daughter. I will return once results are complete

Was able to get an appointment and speak with Dr. Patel and start my daughters treatment plan. He explained what she needed and gave an estimate on how long he thought it would take. I was able to get a discount and make installments for her braces. They also were able to get her braces placed on the same day we started the contract. The woman who explained the contract was very nice and explained everything for me as well. The place was clean 🧼 and relaxing. Staff was pleasant.Bonus Mrs. Penny was still there and she’s amazing and is always welcoming and smiling ☺️

I cant not remember her name but she knows who she is… my son and I came for a consultation for my son to get braces AGAIN…. Side note… I have this thing where his name is pronounced incorrectly alot of time and often when I correct others they catch a attitude and get highly offended… I want to say thank you for correcting yourself with pronuncing his name but not only that.. that just set the tone for the appointment…. Everything she did was personable… I didnt feel pressured to hurry into an agreement for his braces, I also had my younger som my babyboy with me and you know that 3 years old can get kind of touchy and like to adventure off sometimes….. she made me feel very comfortable even when he was “being a kid” it was like he could do no wrong and you know it came from a genuine place ….. Im sooooo sorry I can not remember her name to recognize her but she knows who she is and thank you!!! The little things matter more than you think and just from that experience it made me decide even more like yeaaaaaaaa this is the place to be because just from that experience, I know they are going to take care of my oldest especially with his smile!! See you guys soon for our next appointment
