Going to the Dentist with Braces

Going through orthodontic treatment with braces is one of the best ways to set yourself up for better long-term oral health while also improving the way our smile looks and feels. However, you should still stay on top of your regular teeth cleanings by going to the dentist. In fact, going to the dentist when you have braces is even more important than without. You’ll need to stay on top of your oral health to make sure your smile is not only straight when you get your braces off, but also bright and healthy.

Each Specialist Has their Unique Focus

In the same way that you should choose an orthodontist for your orthodontic treatment instead of your dentist, you should also stick to your dentist for teeth cleaning. Your orthodontist has gone to dental school and has even more education and training than a dentist, but that doesn’t mean you should rely on your orthodontist to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment. They can provide tips for cleaning your teeth and identify areas of concern for your oral health, but they will remain focused on straightening your teeth to get you your new smile.

Your Dentist Can Provide Needed Treatments for Oral Health

When you see your dentist, you can talk about any concerns you have about sensitive teeth, jaw discomfort, and more. If you have cavities or other issues with your teeth, your dentist will be able to provide fillings if needed and prescribe any necessary treatments to get your teeth and your gums fully healthy. Your dentist will also be able to give you a complete teeth cleaning that gets the really hard-to-reach areas where bacteria and plaque can build up, leading to decay.

Having Braces Means You Will Need More Cleanings

While having braces is the best way for you to achieve a straight and bright smile, it also comes with inherent risks to your oral health. It is easier for food particles to get stuck around your teeth, and it is also harder to get them out. This can lead to increased levels of plaque, which puts you at risk for tooth decay.

One way you can fight this is by keeping up with regular oral hygiene techniques like cleaning your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste and flossing with a floss threader. But since it will be harder to thoroughly clean your teeth, it’s important to also make regular appointments with your dentist so they can get rid of tartar buildup. They can also provide you with additional tips and tricks to better clean your teeth with braces.

When it comes to visiting your dentist, it is even more important to do so while you have braces than while you don’t. The recommended interval is two times per year to stay on top of tartar buildup and avoid cavities.

Was able to get an appointment and speak with Dr. Patel and start my daughters treatment plan. He explained what she needed and gave an estimate on how long he thought it would take. I was able to get a discount and make installments for her braces. They also were able to get her braces placed on the same day we started the contract. The woman who explained the contract was very nice and explained everything for me as well. The place was clean 🧼 and relaxing. Staff was pleasant.Bonus Mrs. Penny was still there and she’s amazing and is always welcoming and smiling ☺️

I cant not remember her name but she knows who she is… my son and I came for a consultation for my son to get braces AGAIN…. Side note… I have this thing where his name is pronounced incorrectly alot of time and often when I correct others they catch a attitude and get highly offended… I want to say thank you for correcting yourself with pronuncing his name but not only that.. that just set the tone for the appointment…. Everything she did was personable… I didnt feel pressured to hurry into an agreement for his braces, I also had my younger som my babyboy with me and you know that 3 years old can get kind of touchy and like to adventure off sometimes….. she made me feel very comfortable even when he was “being a kid” it was like he could do no wrong and you know it came from a genuine place ….. Im sooooo sorry I can not remember her name to recognize her but she knows who she is and thank you!!! The little things matter more than you think and just from that experience it made me decide even more like yeaaaaaaaa this is the place to be because just from that experience, I know they are going to take care of my oldest especially with his smile!! See you guys soon for our next appointment

We love Charleston Orthodontics. The staff is AWESOME. So accommodating and friendly. Made the braces experience for both our kids super smooth. They even knew to give them sunglasses to wear when they came in because their futures are so bright. (Sorry. I’m a dad. I don’t know how to turn the dad jokes off.)
