The Worst Advice About Braces

11/14/2018

Everyone can seem like an expert when it comes to braces, giving you input on which orthodontist to see, what product to choose and how to take care of teeth during your orthodontic treatment. The thing is, not all of this advice is entirely correct, and sometimes it is even detrimental to your oral health. When it comes to the worst advice we’ve ever heard about braces, we’ve heard it all, and it’s time to provide a little clarity on some popular misconceptions.

Wait Until All Adult Teeth Are in to See an Orthodontist

Some patients believe that to consider seeing orthodontist, all permanent teeth have to be in, which isn’t the best practice at all! Addressing orthodontic issues early on makes treatment easier and oftentimes quicker than waiting until later in life.

Since everyone is different, permanent teeth come in at different times. Some kids don’t even get all of their permanent teeth in until they’re well into their teens, making fixing any issues more challenging.

Many orthodontists recommend the age of seven as the perfect age to start seeing an orthodontist. This is due to the fact that there’s still room to grow and not all of the teeth have erupted, making it easier to correct certain issues. If there is an overbite or underbite, catching it early while the jaws are still developing is key.

Braces Hurt a Lot

As braces guide your teeth into their proper positions, there can be slight discomfort; however, it isn’t something that’s going to impact you severely as some people may say. Any discomfort you may experience will generally come after you get your braces put on or adjusted. During this time, there are plenty of ways to alleviate any discomfort, including:

  • Over-the-counter pain medication
  • Ice pack
  • Eating soft foods
  • Rest

Don’t worry, any slight pain won’t last long and you should be back to yourself in a matter of a couple days.

Forbidden Foods Are Only Suggestions

When you get braces, your orthodontist will educate you on life with braces and everything from proper oral hygiene to what foods to avoid. Don’t just take the list of forbidden foods as a suggestion, take it as an order. Sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods can wreak havoc, not only on your braces, but on your teeth as well, and they’re best to be avoided altogether, especially when you have braces.

Be sure to adhere to the rules set forth by your orthodontist. They aren’t imposing these rules to be mean, they’re letting you know what you need to do to achieve the best results possible in the least amount of time. You don’t want to set yourself back in treatment because you decided to disobey your orthodontist.

Our Advice About Braces

The best advice we can give about braces is that with proper care and following the instructions from your orthodontist, you have the best chance of achieving a spectacular smile that will last a lifetime. Keep in mind, following your orthodontist’s directions doesn’t stop once your braces come off. Being sure you properly maintain your smile by wearing your retainer regularly will greatly improve your chances for perfect teeth for the rest of your life.

Was able to get an appointment and speak with Dr. Patel and start my daughters treatment plan. He explained what she needed and gave an estimate on how long he thought it would take. I was able to get a discount and make installments for her braces. They also were able to get her braces placed on the same day we started the contract. The woman who explained the contract was very nice and explained everything for me as well. The place was clean 🧼 and relaxing. Staff was pleasant.Bonus Mrs. Penny was still there and she’s amazing and is always welcoming and smiling ☺️

I cant not remember her name but she knows who she is… my son and I came for a consultation for my son to get braces AGAIN…. Side note… I have this thing where his name is pronounced incorrectly alot of time and often when I correct others they catch a attitude and get highly offended… I want to say thank you for correcting yourself with pronuncing his name but not only that.. that just set the tone for the appointment…. Everything she did was personable… I didnt feel pressured to hurry into an agreement for his braces, I also had my younger som my babyboy with me and you know that 3 years old can get kind of touchy and like to adventure off sometimes….. she made me feel very comfortable even when he was “being a kid” it was like he could do no wrong and you know it came from a genuine place ….. Im sooooo sorry I can not remember her name to recognize her but she knows who she is and thank you!!! The little things matter more than you think and just from that experience it made me decide even more like yeaaaaaaaa this is the place to be because just from that experience, I know they are going to take care of my oldest especially with his smile!! See you guys soon for our next appointment

We love Charleston Orthodontics. The staff is AWESOME. So accommodating and friendly. Made the braces experience for both our kids super smooth. They even knew to give them sunglasses to wear when they came in because their futures are so bright. (Sorry. I’m a dad. I don’t know how to turn the dad jokes off.)
