What Is an Open Bite?

There are various issues with the teeth and/or the jaw that can necessitate orthodontic treatment. What Is an Open Bite?

An open bite is also referred to as an anterior open bite. With an open bite, the front upper teeth and the front lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed. An open bite is a type of malocclusion–an issue with the alignment of the teeth. There are several things that can cause an open bite, including abnormal jaw growth, thumb sucking or tongue thrusts.

Once your orthodontist determines that you have an open bite, they will come up with a treatment plan that will address the severity of your bite issue.

What Issues Can an Open Bite Cause?

Open bites can actually cause harm to your overall health, in addition to your mouth health. Improper chewing techniques that are the result of an open bite can impact your digestive system, making it harder for it to breaks down food and properly absorb nutrients from your food.

In addition, with an open bite, there are muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are doing extra work on a daily basis. This can result in the early deterioration of these muscles.

How to Fix an Open Bite

There are easy ways to fix an open bite and your orthodontist will discuss the best options for you after a careful evaluation. Treatment options can include minor behavior changes, braces, and/or possible surgery.

Your orthodontist will recommend the right course of treatment, which is usually braces or Invisalign plus behavioral changes. In some cases, surgery may be the only option to fix bite problems if they are severe.
